Known issues on the 2013 LEAF. Five recalls are on federal record for this model year. One covers the service brakes: in very cold temperatures the relay inside the electronic brake booster may freeze, and if that brake relay fails, longer distances or additional brake effort would be required to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash. Three separate recalls concern the front passenger restraint. In the first, occupant classification system software may incorrectly classify the passenger seat as empty when it is occupied by an adult, and if the system does not detect an adult occupant the passenger airbag would be deactivated, increasing the risk of injury to the passenger if it fails to deploy in a crash where deployment is warranted. In the second, the front seat passenger occupant classification system may incorrectly classify an adult passenger as a child or classify the seat as empty despite it being occupied, again leaving the passenger frontal airbag unable to deploy as intended. In the third, sensors within the passenger occupant detection system may have been manufactured out of specification, which may cause the system to malfunction and permanently suppress the passenger airbag. The fifth recall covers the owner's manual: the instructions for defroster operation are incorrect and may result in reduced defroster performance, which can limit visibility out of the windshield and increase the risk of a crash. NHTSA also has 81 owner complaints on record for the year, and no technical service bulletins.

Remedy
