Toyota built the 2009 Matrix alongside the Corolla, and federal recall records still file it under the name Corolla Matrix. It came with one of two four-cylinder engines, the 1.8L (2ZR-FE) or the 2.4L (2AZ-FE), and the two differ enough in specification that the right figure for one is the wrong figure for the other.

Known issues on the 2009 Matrix. Three recalls are on federal record for this vehicle. Campaign 10V023000 covers vehicle speed control — accelerator pedal: the accelerator pedal can get stuck in the wide open position, and a stuck open accelerator pedal may result in very high vehicle speeds and make it difficult to stop. Campaign 16V340000 covers the frontal passenger-side air bag inflator module, where an inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants. Campaign 10V035000, filed by Gulf States Toyota against certain 2005-2010 vehicles, is an equipment labels defect for failing to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 110, "Tire Selection and Rims" — it does not meet the standard requirements. NHTSA also lists 224 owner complaints and 94 technical service bulletins for the 2009 Matrix.
The pedal and inflator campaigns are the two that still bring these cars into a bay years later, and with Base, S and XRS sold in both automatic and standard form, the answer to almost any question about a 2009 Matrix starts with which engine and which transmission is in front of you.
