This factory service and repair manual is keyed to the 2006 Toyota Matrix specifically — its model year, its 1.8L four in either 1ZZ-FE or 2ZZGE form, and the trim it left the factory as — so the clearances, torque figures and service sequences you work to are the ones Toyota released for this car, not approximations lifted from a different year of the same nameplate.

Known issues on the 2006 Matrix. Four recalls sit on federal record for this model year. One is an engine and engine cooling campaign covering 2005-2008 Corolla and Corolla Matrix vehicles, and it concerns the engine control module (ECM) on cars equipped with the 1ZZ-FE engine and two-wheel drive; the federal record notes that a variety of warnings and consequences are associated with the defect. A second, recorded under exterior lighting, covers certain Anzo combination headlamp assemblies sold as replacement lamps for use on certain passenger vehicles: some are not equipped with amber side reflectors, and without the amber reflectors the vehicle will be poorly illuminated. The remaining two are label recalls — Southeast Toyota on 2005-2011 passenger vehicles and Gulf States Toyota on 2005-2010 vehicles — for failing to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 110, "Tire Selection and Rims"; in the Southeast campaign a driver may overload a vehicle, which may increase the risk of a crash, and on the Gulf States cars the label does not meet the standard requirements. Owners have logged 212 complaints against the 2006 Matrix, and 81 technical service bulletins have been issued for it.
Whether the work is a driveability complaint traced back to the engine control module, a headlamp assembly that has to come out, or a plain scheduled service, it holds you to Toyota's own procedure and the correct figure for a 2006 Matrix.
