Known issues on the 2008 9-3. Two recalls are recorded for the 2008 9-3. Certain vehicles within the recall's build window have a driver's frontal air bag inflator that can split from excess internal pressure during deployment, sending metal pieces toward occupants; the fix is a replacement inflator. Certain convertibles from a defined production span were recalled because the driver's front seat belt retractor could break. The engine accounts for 66 of 183 owner complaints and air bags for 70, with the fuel and propulsion system at 13. Among them, 5 reported a crash, 3 an injury, 1 a fire and 1 a death.
