Four recalls are on federal record for this model year, three of them tied to the passenger frontal air bag inflator module: propellant degradation in the inflator can cause it to explode or rupture during deployment, sending metal fragments into the driver or other occupants and risking serious injury or death. A fourth recall covers aftermarket timing-belt water pumps sold for use on this engine, where a failed pump can cause the timing belt to fail and shut the engine down, increasing the risk of a crash.
