Known issues on the 2003 Tiburon. Seven recalls are on federal record for this model year. Two of them concern the rear brake tubes, which pass behind the front suspension crossmember where two steering gearbox mounting brackets are welded; contact between the tubes and those brackets is the failure at issue, and fluid leakage could result in reduced braking capability, increasing the risk of a crash. Two more cover the fuel tank assembly, where a valve may not close properly against the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 301 for fuel system integrity, and fuel spillage in the presence of an ignition source may result in a fire. A fifth covers the front control arm, which can fracture; that campaign reached 160,904 vehicles across the 2001-2003 Elantra and the 2003 Tiburon, limited to cars originally sold in or currently registered in a named list of states that includes Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa and Maine. A sixth covers the frontal air bags, which may not deploy properly in the event of a crash. The last covers the driver seat belt buckle wiring, which can be damaged by interference with the driver seat cushion height adjuster mechanism, so that an SRS air bag may not deploy in a crash where deployment is warranted. Owners have filed 429 complaints for the year and Hyundai has issued 108 technical service bulletins.
