Known issues on the 1999 A4 Quattro. Seven recalls touch this model year. A front driver-side air bag inflator recall covers Non-Azide Driver inflators that can absorb moisture and cause the air bag to deploy improperly in a crash. A timing belt recall affects certain aftermarket water pump replacements, where a failure can shut the engine down and increase the risk of a crash. Two separate recalls cover aftermarket replacement combination lamps lacking amber side reflectors, reducing visibility to other drivers. Two more recalls cover the steering tie rod seals, which can let moisture and dust into the swivel bearing and wear it over time, diminishing steering control. A final recall covers a vacuum hose control valve to the brake booster on automatic-transmission cars that may not open or close fully in cold weather, causing insufficient vacuum to the brake booster.
