This factory service and repair manual for the 1998 Ford F-150 covers three engines, and one of them does unusual duty: the 5.4L SOHC V8 was built to run on CNG, or as a bi-fuel gasoline and LPG engine, as well as on gasoline alone. The 4.6L V8 and the 4.2L V6 fill out the list. Cabs are the two-door standard and the three-door extended, and five trims are named, the Austera among them. Each system carries its own procedures, specifications, torque values, wiring diagrams and diagnostics, engine by engine.

Known issues on the 1998 F-150. The federal record for 1998 carries eight recalls. One covers fuel tank support straps that can corrode on trucks sold or registered in certain states, with the tank or its fuel lines at risk if a strap gives way. Another is the speed control deactivation switch, capable of overheating, smoking or burning. Aftermarket headlamp campaigns make up the rest. Owners have filed 1,457 complaints with NHTSA, divided among the fuel system, engine and engine cooling, and tires, which is where the fuel and engine chapters do their work.
