Known issues on the 1998 Caravan. Five recalls appear on the federal record for the 1998 Caravan. In certain vans, the clockspring in the steering wheel hub could fail and disable the driver's air bag, first showing up as a lit warning lamp. Certain vans with integrated child seats had the shoulder harness webbing routed wrongly around the seat's reinforcement bar, so a child might not be held properly in a collision. Of 629 owner complaints, engine and engine cooling (135) leads, ahead of the power train (103) and air bags (99); 45 complaints reported a crash, 26 an injury, 23 a fire and 1 a death. The manual provides diagnostics and wiring diagrams for the air bag system and procedures for the fuel system.
