Fuel could seep into the intake manifold through a vacuum line, and if the engine failed to start, a badly timed spark could set off a backfire strong enough to rupture the manifold, knock an injector loose and cause a fuel leak and fire; dealers installed regulators with better diaphragms. Of 398 owner complaints, 196 involve the engine and engine cooling and 68 the gasoline fuel system; 43 reported a fire, 15 a crash and 7 an injury.
