Known issues on the 1996 Eclipse. Suspension leads the 164 owner complaints against the 1996 Eclipse with 28, ahead of engine and engine cooling (26), hydraulic service brakes (24), air bags (18) and power train (16). Of these, 27 reported a crash, 9 an injury and 6 a fire. NHTSA lists 4 recalls. Two dealt with certain 1996 Eclipse vehicles whose front lower ball joint boots could be damaged during assembly, admitting dirt and moisture that could corrode the stud until the joint separated. Another covered certain 1996 Eclipse vehicles whose fuel pump or gauge unit gaskets might be seated wrong, releasing fuel or vapor.
