Known issues on the 1996 MX-6. Federal records list 2 recalls against the 1996 MX-6. In certain cars with the SAS sensor unit, a minor impact to the underside could set off the air bags unexpectedly and injure occupants, so dealers reprogrammed that unit to cut down on needless deployments in low-speed underbody hits. Certain 1996 MX-6 vehicles were also recalled because grease inside the ignition switch may conduct current and overheat it, a fire risk; the remedy was a replacement switch. Air bags account for 7 of the 12 owner complaints; 3 complaints reported a crash and 1 an injury.
