1996 Land Rover Discovery Service and Repair Manual
This factory service and repair manual for the 1996 Land Rover Discovery covers the vehicle exactly as built for that year, powered by the 4.0L V8 (VIN 2) engine, so the torque values, wiring routes and diagnostic steps inside track what Land Rover actually specified rather than a generic Discovery-era approximation.

Known issues on the 1996 Discovery. Three recalls are on federal record for this model year. The first covers the rear driveshaft coupling, where a joint that was not manufactured to the required engineering design specification can exhibit the onset of joint separation under drive-line vibration, and if ignored, catastrophic failure of the coupling can let the driveshaft detach from the vehicle while in motion, causing loss of drive and loss of transmission park functionality and increasing the risk of a crash. The second covers the right front door hinge and attachments: the right front door can fail to latch fully when closing and bounce back off the door seals, increasing the risk of a vehicle accident or personal injury. The third covers the frontal air bag system, where chafing of a cruise control wire can cause the steering wheel rotary coupler to overheat and inadvertently deploy the driver's air bag, which can cause a driver to lose vehicle control. Owners have filed 0 complaints for the year, and no technical service bulletins are on record. The factory diagnostic and repair procedures behind each of those systems are here.
Whether you're inspecting the rear driveshaft coupling, chasing a front door latch that won't hold, or tracing cruise control wiring near the steering column, it keeps you on the OEM procedure and the correct specification for your specific 1996 Discovery.
