This factory service and repair manual for the 1996 GMC Savana 3500 was written around a three-engine lineup that spans two fuels: the turbocharged 6.5L diesel V8, the 7.4L gasoline V8 of 454 cubic inches, and the 5.7L gasoline V8. All three are pushrod designs. Known issues on the 1996 Savana 3500. Three recalls are on the federal record for this model year. One covers aftermarket corner and bumper lamp assemblies sold without the required amber side reflectors, which cuts how well the van is seen from the side. Another addresses passenger vans that develop fuel odors or leakage, a fire risk near any ignition source. The third concerns a rear axle U-bolt that can break and let the leaf spring lift off the axle under braking or cornering. Thirty-seven owner complaints are logged, clustering on the fuel system, service brakes and visibility.
