Known issues on the 1989 626. Front door handles are the subject of the single recall on the 1989 Mazda 626. On certain cars, the resin-molded handle could break at the point where the latch actuating rod connects; the loose rod could then drop into the door, and lowering the window might force it downward and unlatch the door, which could open unexpectedly. Dealers replaced the handle and latch assembly. Of the 42 owner complaints, seat belts appear in 12 and the powertrain in 11, and 4 reported a crash.
