Known issues on the 1987 DeVille. Two recalls are on federal record for this model year. The first covers the fuel system: a replacement fuel filter connector that doesn't meet spec can leave the O-ring poorly seated, creating an inadequate seal that can leak fuel and, near an ignition source, start a fire. The second covers the hydraulic anti-lock brake system: the ABS pressure/warning switch can seep brake fluid and, combined with water contamination the pump motor and electrical relays were exposed to during assembly, can knock out the hydraulic pump motor, causing total loss of rear brakes along with power assist to the front brakes; if the red brake warning light isn't heeded, that loss of rear brakes can lead to a crash, while a failed ABS relay separately kills ABS function while keeping normal power-assisted braking. Owners have filed 54 complaints for the year, and no technical service bulletins are logged. The factory diagnostic and repair procedures behind each of those systems are here.
From tracing a fuel filter connection to servicing the hydraulic ABS pump and relays, it keeps you on the OEM procedure and the correct specification for your specific 1987 DeVille.
