Known issues on the 2013 Optima. Eight recalls are on federal record for this model year, several of them follow-ups to earlier campaigns. One covers the engine, where machining errors during the engine manufacturing process are the cause and bearing wear may result in the engine seizing, increasing the risk of a crash; cars that had received a replacement engine under that campaign were later recalled again over the fuel supply lines, where a fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source can increase the risk of a fire. On cars equipped with the 2.4L Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) or 2.0L GDI Turbo engine, the low pressure fuel hose may deteriorate, and if the fuel hose cracks a fuel leak can occur, increasing the risk of a fire; a further hose campaign went back to cars already repaired under that recall, where the low pressure fuel hose may be damaged and a fuel leak can increase the risk of a fire. Three campaigns concern the antilock brake system: brake fluid may leak inside the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU), and if the HECU short circuits there is an increased risk of an engine compartment fire; a repeat campaign covers cars recalled the first time for that leak, where an electrical short in the HECU increases the risk of a fire while parked or driving; and a third, broader campaign names the same system, where an engine compartment fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury. The last recall covers the right and left headliner plates, which may not be secured properly, and a plate that detaches during a crash may strike an occupant, increasing their risk of injury.
