Known issues on the 2001 Optima. Two recalls are on federal record for this model year. The first concerns the front suspension: corrosion of the front subframe could lead to separation, possibly resulting in a vehicle crash. Kia recalled 36,538 model year 2001-2004 Optima vehicles under that campaign, limited to cars originally sold in or currently registered in certain states, among them Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa and Maine. The second is filed against the electrical system's starter assembly: on certain vehicles equipped with 2.5 and 2.7 liter V6 engines, the crankshaft position sensor cases did not meet dimensional specifications, and internal gaps within the cases allowed epoxy to contact the printed circuit board. Owners have filed 231 complaints against the 2001 Optima, and 24 technical service bulletins have been issued for it.

From pinning down a crankshaft position sensor fault on the V6 to inspecting the front subframe for corrosion, the procedures and the specifications are the ones Kia wrote for the 2001 Optima.
