Kia sold the 2002 Optima with two different powertrains, and the procedures for them are not interchangeable — which is why this factory service and repair manual is keyed to the exact year, engine and trim. Every torque figure and adjustment sequence in it is the one Kia published for this car, not a near-match inherited from a different year or engine.

Known issues on the 2002 Optima. Three recalls are on federal record for this model year. The first is a front suspension recall: corrosion of the front subframe could lead to separation, possibly resulting in a vehicle crash, and Kia recalled 36,538 model year 2001-2004 Optima vehicles originally sold in or currently registered in certain states. The second covers the gasoline fuel tank assembly: some vehicles may contain a fuel tank assembly valve that may not close properly, and if such a vehicle were to roll over, fuel spillage in the presence of an ignition source could result in a fire. The third is an electrical system recall on the starter assembly: on vehicles equipped with the 2.7L V6, the crankshaft position sensor cases did not meet dimensional specifications, and internal gaps within the cases allowed epoxy to contact the printed circuit board. Owners have filed 168 complaints for the year and Kia has issued 19 technical service bulletins. The factory diagnostic and repair procedures behind each of those systems are here.
From a subframe corrosion inspection to tracing a crankshaft position sensor fault on the 2.7L V6 or a routine fuel system check, it holds you to Kia's published procedure and the exact specification for your 2002 Optima.
