2004 Mazda Tribute Service and Repair Manual
Everything in this 2004 Mazda Tribute factory service and repair manual is tied to the vehicle as it was actually built — the model year, the engine under the hood, whether that is the 2.0L four or the 3.0L V6 identified by VIN code 1, and the trim it left the line as — so the clearances, torque values and service sequences you work to are the ones Mazda published for this SUV, not figures borrowed from an adjacent year.

Known issues on the 2004 Tribute. Seven recalls are on federal record for this model year. One covers the frame and members: excessive corrosion at the forward attachment of the lower control arm on vehicles originally sold or currently registered in a defined list of twenty states and the District of Columbia, where a separation of the lower control arm can result in a significant loss of steering control. A second covers engine and engine cooling on 3.0L V6 vehicles with speed control, where inadequate clearance between the engine cover and the speed control cable connector could result in a stuck throttle with the accelerator fully or almost fully depressed, leading to very high vehicle speeds and making the vehicle hard to stop or slow — a risk that exists whether or not cruise control is being used. A third covers the speed control cables: the accelerator cable may prevent the throttle from returning to the idle position, and the unexpected increase in engine idle speed may increase stopping distance. A fourth covers the ABS control unit, where missing or dislodged wire seals in the module connector can let contamination in and create an electrical short, illuminating the ABS warning light and in some cases overheating the module, resulting in burning odor, smoke, and/or fire, with the ignition off or while the vehicle is being driven. A fifth covers the rear liftgate lock, whose latching system does not meet the inertia load requirement of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 206 in one direction, so a liftgate left unlocked may open during a crash. The last two concern service parts fitted to this vehicle: incorrectly sized aftermarket front wheel bearings, which can adversely affect braking and steering, and replacement master cylinders whose seal can fail and leak brake fluid, resulting in poor braking performance. Owners have filed 182 complaints for the year.
Whether you are chasing a throttle that hangs above idle, inspecting the front lower control arm attachment for corrosion, or tracing an ABS lamp back to its module connector, the manual keeps you on Mazda's own procedure and specification for this 2004 Tribute.
