The 2002 Tribute is Mazda's four-door Sport Utility, sold in LX, DX and ES trim with either the 2.0L L4 or the 3.0L V6 that carries engine code VIN 1. Those two engines do not share specifications, and this model year does not share them with the neighboring years of the same platform, so the torque figures and clearances you work to have to be the ones Mazda published for the 2002 Tribute in front of you, not numbers that merely happen to be close.

Known issues on the 2002 Tribute. Nine recalls are on federal record for this model year. One is structural: excessive corrosion at the forward attachment of the lower control arm, where a separation of the arm can result in a significant loss of steering control. Two involve the antilock brake control module — in the first, the brake master cylinder reservoir cap can leak brake fluid onto the ABS module wiring harness connector, where corrosion may develop and lead to melting, smoking or possible fire; in the second, missing or dislodged wire seals let contamination into the module connector and create the potential for an electrical short, which can illuminate the ABS warning light and in some cases overheat the module, producing a burning odor, smoke and/or fire, whether the ignition switch is off or the vehicle is being operated. Two concern throttle return: on 3.0L V6 vehicles with speed control, inadequate clearance between the engine cover and the speed control cable connector can leave the throttle stuck when the accelerator pedal is fully or almost-fully depressed, making the vehicle difficult to slow or stop, and separately an accelerator cable can prevent the throttle from returning to the idle position, raising idle speed and stopping distance. Another covers the automatic transmission control module on vehicles with the 3.0L V6 Duratec, where the engine can stall during deceleration. One covers the rear liftgate lock, whose latching system does not meet the federal inertia load requirement in one direction, so a liftgate left unlocked could open during a crash. The last two are service-part recalls: replacement front wheel bearings of incorrect dimensions, which can adversely affect braking and steering, and replacement master cylinders whose seal can fail and leak brake fluid, resulting in poor braking performance. Owners have submitted 389 complaints for the year.
