The 2003 Porsche Boxster was built in four two-door convertible trims around one of two flat-six engines, a 2.7L and a 3.2L, and the torque values, clearances and service intervals that apply to a given car follow from which combination left the factory.

Known issues on the 2003 Boxster. Four recalls are on federal record for this model year, three of them on exterior lighting. Two cover combination corner and bumper lamp assemblies sold as aftermarket equipment for passenger vehicles, 16,270 units from SaberSport and 42,540 from Dope, Inc., which fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108 because they do not contain the required amber side reflectors; the decreased lighting visibility may result in a crash. The third lighting recall, which reaches 2001–2004 Boxster and Boxster S cars among other Porsche models, covers missing caps over the low-beam headlight horizontal adjustment screws, which can allow the headlights to be improperly adjusted so they may not illuminate the road properly or may glare oncoming drivers. The fourth is a power train recall on cars with the Tiptronic automatic transmission: an incorrectly adjusted key-lock cable down to the shift selector can let the ignition key snag as it is removed from the ignition lock, or let the selector lever be shifted out of Park with the key removed and the locking button operated, and if the lever is then moved to Reverse, Neutral or Drive with the car parked and the parking brake off, the car is not secured from inadvertently rolling away, increasing the risk of a crash. Owners have reported 19 complaints for the year, and no technical service bulletins are logged.
