This factory service and repair manual for the 1989 Ford Thunderbird covers a single engine family in two states of tune: the 3.8L OHV V6 naturally aspirated, and the same 3.8L OHV V6 supercharged. Three body styles are listed, the two-door sedan, the two-door coupe and the two-door coupe sedan, across four trims, Base, Equipado, LX and Super. Supercharger service and boost-related diagnostics are treated separately from the naturally aspirated V6, and the procedures, specifications, torque values and wiring diagrams follow that split throughout.

Known issues on the 1989 Thunderbird. Five recalls bear the 1989 Thunderbird's name. One covers contact between the inboard front brake caliper and the front stabilizer bar, increasing brake pedal travel after low-speed turns. Another concerns rear suspension knuckles improperly heat treated and liable to crack and eventually fracture. A third involves the plastic rollover valve mounting plate on the fuel tank, which may not be sealed and can leak fuel or vapor. Owners have filed 135 complaints with NHTSA, split evenly between vehicle speed control, service brakes and the electrical system at 24 each. The brake, rear suspension, fuel tank and wiring procedures in this manual cover those systems.
