Known issues on the 2011 XJ. Three recalls are on federal record for this model year, and two of them land on the same system. The first covers the frontal air bags: the Restraint Control Module software may cause them to deploy improperly in the event of a frontal impact crash, and failure of the air bags to deploy properly increases the risk of injury in a crash. The second also concerns that module, on cars that did not successfully receive an update to the Restraint Control Module software while being serviced, in which case the default air bag calibration settings may be incorrect; an incorrect calibration may not activate the air bag deployment as intended, increasing the risk of injury. The third is mechanical: the front wiper arms to spindle fixings were not torqued to specification during manufacturing, so the securing nuts could fail to perform as intended, resulting in a loss of wiper arm synchronization and a clash of the wiper arms, which could detach them from the vehicle and reduce the driver's visibility.
