Known issues on the 2003 S55 AMG. Of four complaints naming the 2003 S55 AMG, two involve suspension, two the power train and two the electrical system, and one reported a fire; NHTSA logged 26 complaints against the 2003 S-Class line. NHTSA filed three recalls against wider groups. Two targeted the 2003 S-Class line: certain vehicles with humidity-corroded Active Body Control pressure hoses that could leak onto hot parts and burn, and certain vehicles whose trunk lid springs could fail and let a raised lid drop. One targeted certain 2003 W220-chassis models equipped with front-strut ABC acceleration sensors, where soldering flaws could unbalance the front suspension. The ABC hydraulics and sensors, the trunk lid and the wiring behind them appear in the manual with torque values, diagnostics, wiring diagrams and procedures.
