This factory service and repair manual for the 2002 Mercedes-Benz S55 AMG applies to a sedan with a 332-cubic-inch V8. That engine displaces 5.5 liters, has SOHC heads and breathes without forced induction, fueled by gasoline. Body and trim are equally simple: four-door sedan, Base. From the V8 outward the manual addresses the transmission, the suspension and brake systems, steering, heating and air conditioning, and body wiring.

Known issues on the 2002 S55 AMG. Suspension leads the eleven complaints naming the 2002 S55 AMG with four, and NHTSA logged 43 against the 2002 S-Class line, 17 of them suspension. Three recalls sit on wider groups. Two were filed against the 2002 S-Class line: certain vehicles could suffer internal corrosion in the Active Body Control pressure hose and leak fluid toward hot exhaust parts, a fire risk, and certain vehicles could lose instrument cluster illumination. The third, against certain 2002 W220-chassis models equipped with ABC acceleration sensors on the front struts, involved flawed soldering that could leave the front struts reacting unevenly. The manual treats ABC hydraulics and sensors with repair procedures and torque values, and the cluster circuits with wiring diagrams and diagnostics.
