Known issues on the 1999 A4. Seven recalls are on federal record for this model year. The driver-side frontal air bag inflator module can absorb moisture and deploy improperly in a crash, raising the risk of serious injury. A defective aftermarket water pump used with the timing belt can lead to timing belt failure that shuts down the engine, increasing the risk of a crash. Two separate recalls cover replacement combination lamps sold without amber side reflectors, which reduces visibility to other drivers. Two more cover the steering tie rod swivel bearings, where moisture and dust intrusion can wear the bearing and diminish steering control. A vacuum hose control valve to the brake booster may not open or close fully at temperatures below -4°F on automatic-transmission cars, reducing vacuum to the brake booster. Owners have filed 196 complaints for the year, and no technical service bulletins are logged. The factory diagnostic and repair procedures behind each of those systems are here.
From tracing a brake-assist complaint to inspecting the tie rod seals or servicing the timing belt and water pump, it keeps you on the OEM procedure and correct specification for your specific 1999 A4.
