Known issues on the 1999 A4. Seven recalls are on federal record for this model year. The driver-side frontal air bag inflator module can absorb moisture and deploy improperly in a crash, raising the risk of serious injury. A defective aftermarket water pump used with the timing belt can lead to timing belt failure that shuts down the engine, increasing the risk of a crash. Two separate recalls cover replacement combination lamps sold without amber side reflectors, which reduces visibility to other drivers. Two more cover the steering tie rod swivel bearings, where moisture and dust intrusion can wear the bearing and diminish steering control. A vacuum hose control valve to the brake booster may not open or close fully at temperatures below -4°F on automatic-transmission cars, reducing vacuum to the brake booster. A failure of the timing belt may cause the engine to shut down, potentially increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
Remedy
