Known issues on the 2005 A4. Four recalls are on federal record for this model year, three of them tied to the passenger frontal air bag inflator module: propellant degradation in the inflator can lead to an explosion or rupture that sends metal fragments into the vehicle occupants, resulting in serious injury or death, and Volkswagen issued this recall in three separate waves as replacement parts and regional zones were phased in. The fourth covers an aftermarket water pump used in service replacements on this engine: a resulting timing belt failure can shut the engine down and increase the risk of a crash. Remedy
