Known issues on the 1998 T100. One recall is on federal record for this model year, and it covers the steering linkage — specifically the relay rod. The recall describes certain pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles in which the steering wheel is repeatedly turned under conditions where high steering effort and power assist are required; if the vehicle continues to be operated in that condition, the relay rod may fracture. Owners have filed 33 complaints against the 1998 T100, and Toyota has issued 18 technical service bulletins for it.
That makes the steering linkage the first place to look on a high-mileage T100 that has gone vague or heavy at the wheel, and it is the kind of job where working to Toyota's own 1998 figures matters more than a generic front-end write-up.
