Known issues on the 1998 A4. Six recalls are on federal record for this model year. Two cover aftermarket combination lamps sold as replacements that lack amber side reflectors, reducing visibility to other drivers. A third covers the steering tie rod seals, which can let in moisture and dust and wear the swivel bearing, diminishing steering control over time. A fourth covers a vacuum hose control valve to the brake booster on automatic-transmission cars that may not fully open or close in cold weather below -4 F, reducing vacuum to the brake booster. A fifth covers a loosely seated air screen in the airflow meter that can shed pieces into the intake and prevent the throttle plate from returning to idle after a cold-start backfire. The sixth, and most serious, covers the driver-side front air bag inflator, which can absorb moisture and explode during deployment or underinflate, raising the risk of serious injury or death. VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. IF THE ENGINE BACKFIRES DURING A COLD-START, AN AIR SCREEN WHICH IS LOOSELY SEATED IN THE AIR FLOW METER CAN BECOME DAMAGED.
Consequence
SCREEN PIECES COULD ENTER THE INTAKE AIR FLOW SYSTEM AND PREVENT THE THROTTLE PLATE FROM RETURNING TO ITS FULL IDLE POSITION.
