Known issues on the 1997 Probe. The federal record for the 1997 Probe shows four recalls. The one aimed at the engine is a timing belt tensioner whose external spring can break and get caught in the timing belt, which can stall the engine; the other three are for aftermarket parts, fuel filters with a fire risk and lamps sold without amber side reflectors. Owners have brought 52 complaints to NHTSA, with engine and engine cooling well ahead at 18, then the electrical system at six and service brakes at five.
