Known issues on the 1997 A4. Eight recalls are on federal record for this model year. Two cover aftermarket combination lamps sold as replacements that lack amber side reflectors, reducing visibility to other drivers. Two more cover the ignition switch, where a cracked spring anchor point can leave wipers and headlights inoperative. Another covers a vacuum hose control valve to the brake booster that may not open or close fully below -4°F, providing insufficient vacuum to the booster. A driver-side frontal air bag recall covers static electricity discharge that can activate the bag when entering or exiting the vehicle. A rear seat belt recall covers retractors that may not lock properly in a crash. A separate driver-side frontal air bag inflator recall covers non-azide inflators that may absorb moisture and explode or underinflate during deployment.
