Known issues on the 1996 911. Three recalls are on federal record for this model year. The first covers the frontal air bag, which could deploy without warning and cause a driver to lose vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash and injury. The second covers the engine cooling system: the inside pipes of the heat exchangers could crack, letting exhaust fumes enter the passenger compartment with the heater on, which in extreme cases could cause asphyxiation and loss of vehicle control. The third covers the exhaust system, where the tailpipe cover sleeves were secured with only two welding spots instead of four and could loosen and detach during driving, creating a road hazard.
