Known issues on the 1988 XJS. Four recalls are on federal record for this model year. Two concern the fuel tank: excessive fuel vapor pressure can build and, after prolonged cycling, weaken the tank structure, which can lead to fuel leaks and a fire risk if an ignition source is present. A third covers the automatic passive seat belt system, where the belt motor winch assembly can lock up, causing the belt to jam or stick along its track and leaving occupants unable to use the safety belt in a sudden stop or accident. The fourth covers the speed control system, where dirt entering the electronically controlled valves in the cruise actuator can keep cruise control from disengaging under normal driving, risking a loss of control.
