Known issues on the 1983 XJS. Four recalls are on federal record for this model year. The first covers the fuel tank assembly: excessive fuel vapor pressure can build after prolonged cycling and weaken the tank structure, leading to leaks that, in the presence of an ignition source, could cause a vehicle fire. The second covers the speed control system, where dirt entering the electronically controlled valves in the cruise control actuator can prevent it from disengaging under normal operating conditions, risking loss of control and an accident. The third and fourth both cover the fuel injection system's fuel rail: leakage can develop at the two main fuel rail connections from a combination of misalignment and temperature changes, and separately at the hose and clip fittings, where leakage near an ignition source could cause an engine compartment fire or destroy the ignition distributor cap. Remedy
DEALER WILL REPLACE THE CURRENT TWO PIECE FUEL RAIL WITH A NEW PART KIT OF SINGLE PIECE DESIGN.
POSSIBLE FUEL LEAKAGE FROM THE ENGINE FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM, PARTICULARLY IN THE AREA OF THE HOSE/CLIP FITTINGS.
Remedy
A NEW FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM DESIGNED TO ELIMINATE FUEL HOSE CLIPS WILL BE INSTALLED.
