Known issues on the 1982 XJS. Six recalls are on federal record for this model year, and nearly all of them trace back to the fuel system. Excessive fuel vapor pressure could weaken the fuel tank structure, leading to leaks that, in the presence of an ignition source, could cause a vehicle fire. Dirt entering the electronically controlled valves in the cruise control actuator could keep the system from disengaging under normal driving, risking a loss of control. Deterioration of the high-pressure fuel hose connections could allow fuel leakage in the engine compartment. A fuel pump electrical inertia switch with tin-coated contacts could develop high electrical resistance, overheat, and distort its mounting to the point the vehicle would not start. Misalignment and temperature changes at the two main fuel rail connections could develop leaks there as well, and separately, leakage at the fuel injection system's hose and clip fittings could, with an ignition source present, result in an engine compartment fire or damage to the ignition distributor cap. One owner complaint has been filed for the year, and no technical service bulletins are logged. The factory diagnostic and repair procedures behind each of those fuel and cruise control systems are in this manual.

Remedy
ALL AFFECTED HOSES AND ATTACHMENT CLIPS WILL BE REPLACED AT NO CHARGE TO OWNER.
FUEL LEAKAGE MAY DEVELOP AT THE TWO MAIN FUEL RAIL CONNECTIONS. DETERIORATION AT THESE TWO CONNECTIONS HAS BEEN TRACED TO A COMBINATION OF MISALIGNMENT OF THE TWO RAIL HALVES AND THE EFFECT OF TEMPERA
Remedy
DEALER WILL REPLACE THE CURRENT TWO PIECE FUEL RAIL WITH A NEW PART KIT OF SINGLE PIECE DESIGN.
CERTAIN VEHICLES MAY BE FITTED WITH AN UNAUTHORIZED FUEL PUMP ELECTRICAL INERTIA SWITCH. THIS SWITCH HAS A TIN COATING ADDED TO THE CONTACTS THAT CREATE THE POTENTIAL FOR A HIGH ELECTRICAL RESISTANCE.
Remedy
DEALER WILL INSPECT AND, IF NECESSARY, REPLACE THE INERTIA SWITCH AT NO COST TO OWNER.
POSSIBLE FUEL LEAKAGE FROM THE ENGINE FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM, PARTICULARLY IN THE AREA OF THE HOSE/CLIP FITTINGS.
Remedy
A NEW FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM DESIGNED TO ELIMINATE FUEL HOSE CLIPS WILL BE INSTALLED.
