Known issues on the 1984 LTL9000. Two recalls are on federal record for the 1984 LTL9000. One is the steering shaft campaign, in which poor lubrication could let the shaft assembly come apart without warning. The other is a compliance matter: hand throttle controls were not identified on the control knob or the instrument panel as the federal standard requires. No owner complaints are logged with NHTSA against the 1984 truck. The steering gear and the throttle controls both fall within the manual's procedures, specifications, torque values, wiring diagrams and diagnostics, alongside the three diesels and three chassis types.
INADEQUATE LUBRICATION OF THE STEERING SHAFT COULD CAUSE STEERING SHAFT ASSEMBLIES TO SEPARATE WITHOUT WARNING.
HAND THROTTLE CONTROLS WERE NOT IDENTIFIED EITHER ON THE CONTROL KNOB OR ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL AS REQUIRED BY FMVSS 101.
