Known issues on the 2012 MKZ. The 2012 MKZ has 5 recalls on record and 205 owner complaints, 85 of which involve the air bags and 39 the steering; 11 complaints reported a crash and 7 an injury. On certain 2012 MKZ vehicles, the driver air bag inflator could explode as its propellant degraded with prolonged heat and humidity, and dealers fitted an alternate inflator or module. Certain vehicles with the hybrid powertrain could lose electric power steering assist when a steering motor sensor faulted. Another campaign covered certain vehicles in designated regions with passenger inflators prone to rupture, and owners were told not to drive until the fix was made.
