Known issues on the 2010 Element. Eleven recalls are on federal record for this model year. Eight are Takata-related frontal air bag inflator recalls -- five for the passenger side and three for the driver side -- covering inflators that can rupture and send sharp metal fragments into the cabin; causes cited in the recalls range from propellant degradation after long-term heat and humidity exposure to moisture intrusion and manufacturing variability in the driver-side inflator. A separate recall covers the trailer hitch wiring harness, where the turn signal wire was swapped with the stop lamp wire so the turn signals only illuminate with the brake lights, meaning the driver's turn intent isn't communicated to other traffic. Another covers the accelerator pedal assembly, which can bind and delay the throttle's return to idle, increasing the risk of a crash. The last covers the automatic transmission shift cable on vehicles built between April 1, 2010 and June 25, 2010, where the cable could be set incorrectly at the shift lever bracket, letting the driver move the gear shift lever without the transmission actually engaging the selected gear.
