Known issues on the 2006 Element. Eleven recalls are on federal record for this model year, most of them centered on the Takata driver and passenger frontal air bag inflators: propellant degradation, incorrect installation, and manufacturing variability could each cause an inflator to rupture or explode, sending metal fragments toward the driver and other occupants and risking serious injury or death. A separate recall corrects the owner's manual, whose printed contact information for the NHTSA safety hotline did not meet mandatory requirements. Another covers the automatic transmission control module, where a broken secondary shaft bearing race can short-circuit and stall the engine, or lodge debris in the parking pawl and let the vehicle roll after the gear selector is set to Park. Two further recalls apply to aftermarket corner and bumper lamp assemblies that lack the required amber side reflectors, reducing visibility.
