Known issues on the 2007 Element. Twelve recalls are on federal record for this model year, the majority tied to Takata frontal air bag inflators on both the driver and passenger side: propellant degradation or moisture intrusion can cause the inflator to rupture or explode, sending sharp metal fragments toward the driver, front passenger, or other occupants, with one of those campaigns also covering a passenger air bag that may have been installed incorrectly during a prior replacement. A separate recall covers an aftermarket accelerator pedal assembly sold for the Element, where the rotating portion can bind and keep the engine from quickly returning to idle. Another covers the automatic transmission's secondary shaft bearing, whose outer race can break, trigger abnormal noise and the malfunction indicator light, and in rare cases let debris lodge in the parking pawl and allow the vehicle to roll after the gear selector is placed in Park. A trailer hitch wiring harness recall covers a wiring mix-up that ties the trailer turn signals to the brake lamps instead of illuminating independently, an aftermarket headlamp recall covers corner and bumper lamp assemblies missing the required amber side reflectors, and a VSA modular pump recall covers air that can enter the brake system during the engine's startup self-check and leave the pedal feeling soft over time.
