2005 Ford Freestar Service and Repair Manual
This factory service and repair manual for the 2005 Ford Freestar documents the same pair of pushrod V6 engines as the year before, the 4.2L of 256 cubic inches and the 3.9L of 238 cubic inches, in a minivan sold as a four-door passenger van and a four-door cargo van. Nine trims are listed, from Base and S through the two LX grades to Limited and Sport. The manual works engine by engine for tune-up and rebuild data and van-wide for suspension, brakes, body and wiring.

Known issues on the 2005 Freestar. Four recalls stand on the federal record. One covers the torque converter output shaft, whose failure causes a sudden loss of drive. Another concerns power liftgates: the motor disengages once the gate is open, so a failing strut lets the gate fall freely on anyone beneath it. A third involves third row seats that may not latch. Owners have filed 886 complaints with NHTSA, and the great majority of them are power train reports. The transmission, liftgate and seat procedures in this manual are the ones that answer them.
ON CERTAIN VANS EQUIPPED WITH THE POWER LIFTGATE OPTION, THE POWER LIFTGATE MOTOR AUTOMATICALLY DISENGAGES AFTER THE LIFTGATE IS POWERED OPEN.
