Fuel delivery dominates the owner reports: of 143 complaints about the 2004 E500, 57 fall under fuel and propulsion and 31 under the gasoline fuel system, with suspension next at 22. Three of those complaints reported a crash, two a fire and two an injury. The car's own three recalls deal with certain vehicles whose sunroof glass could separate because it was poorly fastened or its bond to the frame weakened. Separately, the 2004 E-Class line drew four recalls, one covering certain vehicles where incorrect software coding applied during a workshop visit could stop the fuel pump from receiving the shut-off signal after a crash.
