This factory service and repair manual for the 2003 Chevrolet C4500 Kodiak treats it as the medium-duty truck it is. Two engines were offered: the 6.6-liter turbocharged diesel of 403 cubic inches and the 8.1-liter naturally aspirated gasoline V8 of 496. Four configurations left the plant — conventional two-door cab and chassis, crew cab and chassis, cutaway chassis and motorhome cutaway — under the order codes C4C042, C4E042, C4U042 and C4V042. Each gets a body mounted later, so the frame and chassis wiring detail matters.

Known issues on the 2003 C4500 Kodiak. One recall stands on the federal record for this year, and it involves the rear suspension on trucks with the heavier rear axle: the anchor plate can crack, announcing itself with a bang, and once it has fractured the axle is free to shift fore and aft under braking, rebound or cornering, with a crash the possible result. Five complaints were logged, two of them on engine and engine cooling and one each on the fuel and electrical systems. Rear axle mounting, cooling system diagnosis, fuel delivery and circuit testing are all specified here.
