This factory service and repair manual for the 2002 Mercedes-Benz S500 is built for a four-door sedan in Base trim with a 5.0L V8 under the hood. That V8 uses a single overhead camshaft arrangement, takes in air without forced induction and burns gasoline. The manual gives procedures, torque values and specifications for its engine, transmission, chassis, body and electrical systems.

Known issues on the 2002 S500. NHTSA filed three recalls against wider groupings. Two belong to the 2002 S-Class line: certain vehicles could suffer rust inside the active body control pressure hose, letting fluid drip near the catalytic converter with a fire risk, and certain others had instrument clusters that could go dark. The third, for the 2002 W220-chassis models, covered certain vehicles whose front struts carry active body control acceleration sensors, where faulty solder joints could make one strut adjust while the other did not. The S500 draws 29 owner complaints, 16 electrical; one reported a crash and one a fire. Another 43 cite the 2002 S-Class line, led by suspension. Suspension hydraulic procedures and wiring diagrams address both.
