Known issues on the 2001 Alero. NHTSA lists 4 recalls for the 2001 Alero. On certain 2001 Alero vehicles equipped with manual transaxles, a shift inhibitor could leave the gearbox mechanically in fourth when the driver selected reverse, so the key could come out while the car was in a forward gear. Certain 2001 Alero vehicles also had hazard switches whose solder joints could crack, cutting out the turn signals, and certain 2001 Alero vehicles could have the ignition switch jarred out of run, stalling the engine and risking air bag nondeployment. Owners filed 364 complaints, 130 on the electrical system. Twenty complaints reported a crash, 5 a fire, 13 an injury and 1 a death. Transaxle and electrical diagnostics apply.
