Known issues on the 1999 Alero. The federal record holds 3 recalls for the 1999 Alero. Certain 1999 Alero vehicles were recalled because a heavy key ring or a sharp jolt could rotate the ignition switch out of run, killing the engine and possibly keeping the air bags from firing. On certain 1999 Alero vehicles, 217 of them, the steering wheel retaining nut may not have been tightened properly, so the wheel could separate from the shaft. Owners filed 462 complaints, led by hydraulic service brakes at 111 and the electrical system at 89. Of those complaints, 14 reported a crash, 11 a fire, 13 an injury and 2 a death.
