This factory service and repair manual for the 2001 Mercury Cougar covers three trims of the coupe — Base, S and V6 — with a mechanical choice of two naturally aspirated twin-cam engines, the 2.0L inline-four of 121 cubic inches and the 2.5L V6 of 155. Trim differences show up mainly in equipment, so the sections that move with them are the body and electrical ones, where component locations and wiring diagrams are given, while the engine and driveline coverage splits only by displacement.

Known issues on the 2001 Cougar. Three recalls are recorded. One concerns contamination in the fuel delivery module filter that can restrict fuel flow enough to make the engine hesitate, surge, lose power and eventually stall. Another concerns replacement master cylinders that can lose brake fluid, dropping line pressure and lengthening the stop. The third concerns replacement ball joints supplied with nuts that lack a self-locking feature, so the joint can work loose and separate, taking control of the car with it. Owners have logged 82 complaints, fuel first at 19, then electrical and engine cooling at 10 apiece.
