Known issues on the 2001 M5. Three recalls stand on the federal record. Two concern the restraint system: a driver air bag inflator supplied as replacement equipment that can rupture and throw metal fragments as it deploys, and a control module microprocessor fault that can fire the air bags, the belt pretensioners or the battery safety terminal with no crash occurring, leaving the engine unable to be restarted. The third covers tire sidewalls damaged during mounting at the plant, which can lose air suddenly. Of four complaints, three concern air bags and one the tires.
