Known issues on the 1999 Contour. The NHTSA record for the 1999 Contour lists five recalls. One concerns the ignition switch on automatic cars with a park/lock solenoid, where the key can be turned to lock and removed without the transmission in park. Another covers the rear brake pressure reducing valve on cars without anti-lock brakes, which can corrode and let the rear wheels lock. Owners have filed 459 complaints with NHTSA, led by the structure at 78, then the electrical system at 52 and the engine and cooling system at 50.
